Let’s Talk About the 400mm Halogen Heating Lamp
When we built our 400mm halogen lamps, we weren’t thinking about lighting up a room. No, these are all about raw, concentrated heat. We’re talking shortwave infrared energy designed to move heat into your material fast. The power side of things At 400mm, we’ve found a sweet spot. It lets us push the wattage without stressing the filament to the breaking point. If you’re running a high-voltage setup, you’ll notice the heat ramps up almost instantly. That’s a lifesaver when your material is only in the heating zone for a few seconds. But here’s the catch: you’ve got to match your power supply to the lamp’s rated voltage. If you push too much voltage through the tube, you’re basically asking for the filament to burn out. It’s a quick way to kill your lamp’s lifespan. Quartz and the “nitty-gritty” We use high-purity quartz glass because the heat inside these things is intense. We add halogen gas to the mix so the tungsten filament doesn’t evaporate and cloud up the tube. This keeps the heat flowing clear and strong. For the plugs, we usually stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re the industry standard, so they should slide right into most industrial ovens without a fight. Plus, they fit tight. You don’t want your lamps vibrating loose while the machine is humming along. Where these actually live You’ll mostly see these in PET bottle blowing or plastic shrink tunnels. The 400mm size just works for medium-sized heating arrays. Since these lamps put out so much energy, your reflectors need to be mirror-perfect. If they aren’t, you’re wasting heat. One last thing—and this is important. Because these get so hot, your cooling fans need to be up to the task. If the airflow is weak, that heat creeps back into the lamp holders and can actually melt your wiring. And a pro tip: keep the quartz glass clean. No oils, no fingerprints. Fingerprints create hot spots, and hot spots crack the glass. Simple as that.
