
Let’s talk about Halogen Quartz IR Lamps
We build these lamps for the tough jobs—the kind of high-intensity heat where your standard resistive heaters just give up. Instead of wasting energy heating up all the air in your oven, we use a tungsten filament inside a halogen-filled quartz tube. It focuses the heat right where it needs to go: directly onto the surface of your product. Getting the power right When you’re picking out your tubes, keep an eye on the voltage-to-wattage ratio. That’s what controls your heat flux. If you cram a high-wattage tube into a small space, you get an incredible amount of heat density. It’s fast. Really fast. And that’s exactly what you want if you’re running a fast-cure drying line. But here’s the catch: your power supply has to be spot on. If you under-power the lamp, you lose that infrared punch. Over-power the thing? You’ll fry the filament in a matter of hours. The nuts and bolts We use high-purity quartz because it doesn’t crack when you cycle the heat up and down rapidly. Plus, the halogen cycle is a neat little trick—it basically puts evaporated tungsten back onto the filament, which keeps the lamp alive much longer. Wiring them up is pretty painless. We usually use R7s or Sk15 connectors, so they should slide right into most industrial oven arrays. You won’t have to tear apart your whole housing just to get them running. Depending on what you’re drying, you might want a coated envelope. This shifts the heat from shortwave to medium-wave, which is helpful if you need the heat to sink deeper into the material rather than just hitting the surface. A few things to watch out for These lamps put out a massive amount of heat, and that heat doesn’t just disappear. You can’t just plug them in and walk away. Make sure your ventilation and cooling can handle the buildup around the sockets. If those connectors get too hot, the insulation melts, and you’re looking at a short circuit. And one last tip: keep a close eye on your conveyor speed. Balance it with the lamp intensity so you don’t accidentally scorch your product.
